India’s Biggest Advantage Is Not Its Market It’s Its Entrepreneurs

Anil K. Antony on Why the Next Global Opportunity Belongs to Indian MSMEs

As India accelerates towards the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, MSMEs are emerging as the driving force behind innovation, manufacturing and global competitiveness. In an exclusive conversation with BUSINESS BOOM Editor Nazir Salam, Anil K. Antony shares key insights from his newly published book Advantage India, explaining why this is India’s defining moment and how Kerala’s entrepreneurs can become global players.

Q: Your book is titled Advantage India. Why do you believe this is India’s moment?

Anil K. Antony:

India is witnessing a rare convergence of reforms, digital transformation, infrastructure growth, manufacturing expansion, technological innovation and geopolitical change. We are no longer just participating in the global economy..we have the opportunity to shape it.

Q: What does Viksit Bharat 2047 really mean?

Anil K. Antony:

A developed India is not measured only by GDP. It is about becoming technologically advanced, economically resilient, globally respected and strategically self reliant. We must create technologies, own intellectual property, build world class companies and manufacture products the world depends on.

Q: Where do MSMEs fit into this national vision?

MSMEs Are India’s Growth Engine

Anil K. Antony:

Large industries create capacity, but MSMEs build the supply chains that make industries globally competitive. The biggest opportunity is not always making the final product it is becoming a trusted supplier to global manufacturing ecosystems.

Q: Which sectors offer the biggest opportunities for entrepreneurs?

The Future Belongs to High Technology Industries

Anil K. Antony:

Artificial Intelligence, semiconductors, electronics, defence manufacturing, space technology, biotechnology, healthcare, clean energy, electric mobility and advanced manufacturing will define the next decade. Every one of these sectors requires thousands of innovative MSMEs.

Q: How can AI benefit small businesses?

Anil K. Antony:

AI is no longer only for large corporations. Small businesses can use AI for product design, quality control, inventory management, customer service, forecasting and exports. Technology is becoming the biggest equaliser for MSMEs.

Q: What special opportunities do you see for Kerala?

Kerala Can Become a Global Innovation Hub

Anil K. Antony:

Kerala’s strengths lie in its educated workforce, research institutions, IT ecosystem and global diaspora. Defence electronics, aerospace, marine technology, healthcare, food processing, tourism and green technologies offer enormous growth potential.

Q: How important is Vizhinjam Port to Kerala’s future?

Anil K. Antony:

Vizhinjam can transform Kerala into a logistics and export hub. But a port succeeds only when industries, warehouses, exporters and MSMEs grow around it. Entrepreneurs must prepare now to become part of this ecosystem.

Q: What role can the Malayali diaspora play?

Anil K. Antony:

The diaspora is much more than a source of remittances. It can bring investment, technology, global market access and mentorship. We should convert this global network into an engine for entrepreneurship.

Q: What must MSMEs do to become globally competitive?

Think Global. Build Global

Anil K. Antony:

Invest in quality, technology, innovation, intellectual property and professional management. Collaborate with universities, research institutions and industry. Build brands not just products. Global success begins with global standards.

Q: Your message to Kerala’s young entrepreneurs?

Don’t Build a Small Business. Build a Global Enterprise

Anil K. Antony:

Don’t limit yourself to Kerala’s market. Think of India and the world as your marketplace. The story of Viksit Bharat will be written by entrepreneurs who dream big, innovate continuously and create world class businesses from every corner of the country.

“India’s greatest advantage is not merely its population or its market. It is the ability to combine democracy, entrepreneurship, technology and human aspiration at an unprecedented scale. The future belongs to those who innovate, collaborate and think globally.”
